The Story of the Material
European Walnut Cradle
During the last Ice Age, the Balkans were one of the key refugial areas for the European Juglans regia. From this refuge, the species later gradually spread across the rest of Europe, preserving its genetic continuity. Indigenous, distinctive regional genotypes formed precisely within these refugial zones, where continuity was longest, which is why the European walnut from this region is genetically especially valuable.
